Recently replayed this campaign on 1.18.0, difficult. Overall it was easier than I remembered. One major reason is that the enemies have less money, but also it now takes very little exp to level mermaids, initiates are cheaper, enemies spend more money on level 3s, and this time I acquired three loyal bats that are auto-deployed each map. Arcane does less damage to skeletons but it's still good and I also have lots of impact attacks.
In the first scenario I trained cylanna, gwabbo, and a diviner to lvl3 and got kai and another priestess to lvl2. Afterwards I got a bunch of diviners and a couple sirens. Rather than being exp investment targets they practically leveled on their own. When I first played this campaign I thought the pacing was good since I didn't know what to expect and didn't get much exp in scenario 2. But this time I was ready for the end of the campaign after scenario 2.
(By the way I noticed that lvl3 units generally cost a lot more, I wonder if this makes enemies that recruit lvl3s less dangerous than enemies that only recruit lvl2s because they burn through their gold faster. I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on the specifics of prices e.g. why the merman javelineer is more valuable than a diviner)
Anyway this is still a great campaign, I especially enjoyed replaying the first two scenarios.
